In the final chapter of Monteiro’s João de Deus trilogy, his alter ego receives an envoy from God in military clothes, who make him a millionaire. Expelled from society due to his crimes, João de Deus goes from rags to riches and finds a natural home for his hedonism in a new palace and revamped social status. He quickly runs out of luck, however, after falling for a woman who awakens his worst impulses, leading him to another conviction and a final meeting with an old friend who speaks the word of God, leading to a chance at redemption that, in a nod to Robert Bresson’s Pickpocket (1959), may finally unite him with an unforgiving cosmos.
