Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror). 1922. Germany. Directed by F. W. Murnau. Screenplay by Henrik Galeen, based on Dracula by Bram Stoker. With Max Schreck, Gustav von Wangenheim, Greta Schröder, Alexander Granach. DCP. Silent, with English intertitles. 81 min.
F. W. Murnau’s unauthorized version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the author’s widow unsuccessfully tried to get all copies of the film destroyed—became one of the most emblematic films of German Expressionism, thanks in part to the unforgettably horrific performance (and makeup) of Max Schreck as one of the first vampires in film history. The transgressive combination of spiritual bliss and physical repulsion in a decrepit villain who feeds on the blood of the innocent fueled the allure and asocial tendencies of João César Monteiro’s onscreen alter ego, João de Deus.
