When Robert Frank first came to the United States to work as a professional photographer, he had a brief stint as a staff fashion photographer at Harper’s Bazaar before leaving to pursue his personal photography and freelance projects. As Frank turned to filmmaking in the 1950s, making works like Pull My Daisy (1959), his professional work continued to appear in advertisements and editorial illustrations for magazines, newspapers, and books throughout the 1950s and ’60s.
In conjunction with the exhibition Life Dances On: Robert Frank in Dialogue, join writer and curator Vince Aletti, art historian Stuart Alexander, and Newhall Curatorial Fellow Kaitlin Booher for a live online conversation about how this little-known aspect of Frank’s career was a proving ground for ideas about photography and film, as well as a crucial means to live and work as an artist in the US.
Please note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Vince Aletti is unable to participate in this program.
