- Herbert Matter (April 25, 1907 – May 8, 1984) was a Swiss-born American photographer and graphic designer known for his pioneering use of photomontage in commercial art. The designer's innovative and experimental work helped shape the vocabulary of 20th-century graphic design.

- Died 8 May 1984. Studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, Switzerland, 1925-1927. Studied drawing and painting at the Académie Moderne, Paris, France, under Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant, 1927-1929. Freelance photographer and designer; worked for Le Corbusier and the Studio Deberny & Peignot, Paris, France, 1929-1932. Collaborated with the magazine Arts et Métiers Graphiques, Paris, France, 1930-1936. Produced posters (design and photomontages) for the Swiss National Tourism Office, Zurich, Switzerland, 1932-1936. Emigrated to the United States, 1936. Freelance photographer; worked for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Town and Country, New York City, New York, 1936-1946. Created the design of the Swiss Pavilion and the Corning Glass Pavilion at the World Fair, New York City, 1939. Photographer and designer for the office of Charles and Raye Eames in Venice, California, 1943-1946. Staff photographer, Editions Condé Nast, New York City, New York, 1946-1957. Consultant and art director for Knoll Associates, 1946-1966. Professor of photography at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, 1952-1976. Freelance photographer and designer in New York City, New York, from 1958. Design consultant, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City, New York, and for the Fine Arts Museum in Houston, Georgia, 1958-1968. Produced a photographic essay on the works of Alberto Giacometti, 1960-1977. Produced a graphics program for the New York Studio School, 1964-1978. American photographer and graphic designer, born in Switzerland.
