German Expressionism: The Graphic Impulse
March 27–July 11, 2011
Brücke artists believed that contact with nature could replenish the spirit and help restore meaning to life. They took frequent excursions to the country with their models to swim, sunbathe, and sketch in the nude. Heckel’s image reflects the group’s desire for spontaneity and freedom from societal mores.
