About the periodical

Rob Madole, German Expressionist Digital Archive Project, German Expressionism: Works from the Collection. 2011.

Ganymed was an influential Expressionist yearbook published in four volumes between 1919 and 1922, with a fifth volume published in 1925. Each issue contained, along with reproductions of classical, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist works, original prints by important Expressionist artists including Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel, Heinrich Campendonk, and Alfred Kubin as well as literary contributions from renowned authors such as Alfred Döblin and Robert Musil.

PUBLICATION HISTORY

Edited by the influential art critic Julius Meier-Graefe, the yearbook was dedicated to showcasing the folios and various artistic undertakings of his Marées Society, a Munich-based artistic circle named for the nineteenth-century German painter Hans von Marées.

Ganymed's focus quickly grew to encompass literature, music, and politics in addition to art. In his introduction to the first issue, Meier-Graefe strove to present an ideal image of the artist as "the last hero of a mechanistic time in which the masses reign, the purest hero." Initially Ganymed took a decidedly declamatory, even bombastic, tone, though by its third volume the publication had shed its revolutionary pretenses, instead providing sober and refined criticism of the times. Special editions of the last three volumes were accompanied by a portfolio furnished with additional prints by the contributing artists.
