Mimbrales

SANTIAGO

Designer: Andrea Von Chrismar

Mimbre is a traditional weaving craft that has existed in Chile since pre-colonial times. Initially used in the production of basketry, and later furniture, its practical and aesthetic qualities have seldom been explored on a larger scale. The membranes incorporated come from research exploring the spatial and structural potential of woven natural fibers on an architectural scale.

Recognizing the flexibility, resistance, permeability and lightweight properties of this material, Andrea Von Chrismar proposed the use of 50 flexible woven Mimbre structures for the construction of a "Temporary Urban Landscape." The project aims to vitalize the public space in front of the cultural center through the creation of sheltered spaces for resting and leisure.
