Harry Finley
Founder and director, Museum of Menstruation
As an old (71 and white) man I don’t believe I could experience someone else’s feelings and, when younger, did not really know the feelings I have now. Intellectually, maybe, but not with genuine emotion. The Machine generates feelings caused by the Machine, not menstruation.
I started the museum not trying to feel what women do, or a particular woman – how could I? – but wanting to show what cultures around the world have made of menstruation. It’s an intellectual enterprise. Some women have questioned my creating the museum because as a male how could I experience it? But they are confusing two different things. It’s like reading a dissection of a Beethoven string quartet and hearing it. I can’t “hear” menstruation but I can dissect it. That’s my contribution and it’s worth it.
