Not on view
This painting, based on a snapshot, shows Richter smiling tentatively with his friend the art critic Benjamin Buchloh before a Gothic cathedral in the artist's native city of Dresden. Richter blurs the forms in his photobased paintings with the swipe of a brush or straightedge scraper, deleting much of the information contained in the original source. "I never paint to create a likeness of a person or of an event," Richter has written. "Even though I paint credibly and correctly, as if the likeness were important, I am really using it only as a pretext for a picture."
