Most of the illustrations in He Disappeared into Complete Silence evolved through several stages (states) of development. This is one of the eleven states Bourgeois created for her Plate 7 composition. She described its architectural imagery in emotional terms, calling this scene a "total confrontation" and "a fight for survival."
