This screenprint was among twenty variations that Pollock made of the same image, using different color combinations of paper and ink. Many of the details can be traced to works Pollock would have known by artists including the Surrealist Joan Miró and, most notably, Pablo Picasso, whose famous 1937 mural, Guernica, is an obvious source.
