New on viewIndia enacted sweeping reforms in 1991 that integrated its domestic economy within the global economy. A consumer society arose, while wealth inequality soared. Against this backdrop, Sundaram began to photograph a makeshift marketplace held each Sunday outside Delhi’s Red Fort, an old imperial residence, where used and discarded goods were sold. “Here is reality at the poverty level of consumption,” the artist said, where “only the poorest of the poor buy and sell.” Great Indian Bazaar comprises Sundaram’s photographs, heaped on the floor to emulate the display of wares in the market’s stalls. They are presented in red metal frames that recall ones sold at the market.
