These computer-generated diagrams show the electronic pathways that make up a microchip. Invented in 1958, the microchip revolutionized contemporary society, enabling space travel and technologies including satellites, cell phones, and computers. Represented at several hundred times the scale of actual circuits, the colors and textures in these designs distinguish the various layers and the spatial relationships between the elements of an integrated circuit.

In 2018–19, MoMA collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab on a project using machine learning to identify artworks in installation photos. That project has concluded, and works are now being identified by MoMA staff.
