Untitled (Seeds) stems from Hiro’s ongoing fascination with the body’s “unknowability,” referring to the limited ways people perceive their physical selves, frequently through the mediation of devices like cameras or mirrors. To make this work, the artist stepped into the holes at the bottom of the canvas, used the ropes to pull the fabric up around his body, and then traced the path of his movements while wrapped inside the cocoon-like environment with vivid layers of dye and oil pastel. For Hiro, the “canvas functions like a 360-degree body scanner,” with the painting reflecting his “encounter and engagement with the unknown.”
