Henri Matisse Cover design for exhibition catalogue Henri Matisse 1951

  • Not on view

In 1951 MoMA published Alfred H. Barr Jr.’s nearly six-hundred-page monograph on Matisse, a book that had been many years in the making. That monograph presents the first art-historical discussion of The Red Studio, forty years after the painting's creation. In parallel, the Museum opened a survey exhibition of Matisse’s work. The artist made paper cut-outs as designs for the book jackets of both the large monograph and this slim exhibition catalogue. Even at this small scale, their exuberant style and vibrant color exemplify the last chapter of Matisse’s career.
