Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec What the Rain Says (Ce que dit la pluie) from Quatorze lithographies originales (Mélodies de Désiré Dihau) 1895, published 1935

  • Not on view

The booming café-concert scene demanded a constant supply of new music, and Lautrec made numerous cover illustrations for songs sung or written by his friends. Among these was Désiré Dihau, a distant cousin of Lautrec’s who played bassoon with several Paris orchestras, including those of the Opéra de Paris and the El Dorado.
