Barkley L. Hendricks. Sweet Thang (Lynn Jenkins). 1975-76

Barkley L. Hendricks Sweet Thang (Lynn Jenkins) 1975-76

  • MoMA, Floor 4

Barkley Hendricks is celebrated for the stylish, self-assured portraits he painted of his friends, family, students, and neighborhood acquaintances from the late 1960s through the 1970s. The artist selected subjects who “piqued [his] curiosity . . . by virtue of fashion and personality.” This painting portrays Lynn Jenkins, a student of Hendricks’s at Connecticut College. Jenkins poses on a sofa with calculated nonchalance, her defiant gaze steadily meeting the viewer’s. Her close-to-bursting bubble gum adds a special immediacy and irreverence to the work.
