Julia Murdoch 1968 Mexico Olympics Dress 1968

  • Not on view

Murdoch was part of a team of designers who created the graphic identity for the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City. Her design for this dress incorporates the memorable five-ring logo designed by her colleague Lance Wyman and was manufactured in a variety of colors. Wyman's graphics draw on motifs from prehistoric Mesoamerican Olmec culture and have a recognizably Mexican color palette, while also channeling the energy and geometry of contemporary Op-art artists such as Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. Murdoch's mini-dress, worn by Olympics employees around the city, encapsulates these design currents in a portable form.
