Memory: Past is made from strips of canvas sewn into rows and nailed directly to the wall. In a time-intensive and laborious process, The artist built up layers of paint, dye, and powder to create this rose-colored abstract work. The top of the composition is punctuated by photo fragments and shimmering glitter. Pindell, who worked as the first Black woman curator at MoMA in the decade before she made this painting, occasionally visited the Museum’s frame shop, where she would collect materials for her art.
