Behind the young boy in this photograph hangs a poster for one of the “Double V for Victory” campaigns—racial equality at home along with victory abroad—organized by Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. It serves as a symbol of the emerging forms of civil-rights activism seen in Harlem in these years, and suggests hopes for the future.
