David Lamelas
Analysis of the Elements by which the Massive Consumption of Information Takes Place
1968
16mm film transferred to video (color, silent; 29 min.), three tape recorders, three audio tapes, display case with two magazines and two newspapers
With this work, first shown in the exhibition Prospect 68 in Düsseldorf, Lamelas sought to explore whether it is possible to present mass media content in a way that is “free of ideology.” By isolating three forms of information—audio, visuals, and text—Lamelas encouraged visitors to deconstruct and actively examine their daily experience of the media apparatus. He made audio recordings of BBC radio broadcasts, separated them into categories (news, music, and advertising), and played them back on three tape recorders in the gallery. He also extracted a short clip from a television commercial, which played on a loop above assorted newspapers and magazines that the artist replenished throughout the original display.
