“I wanted to put art in the context of everyday life,” Hershman Leeson said of her project for the Fifth Avenue department store Bonwit Teller. She created twenty-five window displays, combining the store’s mannequins with a range of materials, such as photographs, television sets, computers, tape recorders, mirrors, steam, and holographs. The scenes were narratively linked and explored themes of identity, commercialism, gender, and surveillance. Hershman Leeson extended the project beyond the store by installing one of the mannequins, called Bonnie, in various locations throughout the city.
