In 2003, TEMPT1, a graffiti artist and activist, was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which eventually leaves those living with it paralyzed. But TEMPT1 continued to draw his tag on buildings in downtown Los Angeles using EyeWriter, a tool he developed with the help of a group of researchers. The EyeWriter is equipped with eye-tracking technology and software that captures the artist’s eye movements and sends them from a laptop at his bed to a remote laser-tagging device. As he draws, his tag is projected—large-scale and in real time—on buildings throughout the city.
