Throughout her career, González has maintained a daily routine of collecting images from newspapers and popular culture, reworking them as source material for her artistic practice. Her paintings, drawings, and sculptures mix these popular and commercial forms with themes and techniques from art history to explore notions of “good taste.” Here, the artist repurposes an image of a female bather—a subject depicted throughout the history of art. González based her form on an inexpensive color print sold by the Colombian company Gráficas Molinari, in which the bather floats in a river near Rionegro, where González’s family vacationed. The shapes at the painting’s corners recall the fasteners in a family photo album, while a strip of yellow, blue, and red colors alludes to Colombia’s national flag.
