Lucy McKenzie. Untitled. 2002

Lucy McKenzie Untitled 2002

  • MoMA, Floor 2, 209 The David Geffen Wing

These two paintings show the same jumpsuit-clad androgynous figure creating a billboard-sized image. In one, the figure consults a picture in order to paint a large brain on the wall. In the second, again consulting a source, the figure writes the word “brain” in the space on a drawn head where the brain would be. The font recalls the logo of the Braun company, famous for its less-is-more approach to appliance design, but red graffiti is scrawled over the image and McKenzie’s paintings offer a riot of textures and references.
