John Johnson: A Life at the Movies

Feb 6–28, 2003

MoMA

On July 16, 2002, The Museum of Modern Art was deeply saddened to report the death of John Johnson, Senior Cataloguer in the Department of Film and Media. John joined the Museum in 1988, and his contributions to the development and refinement of the Department’s collection catalogue, as well as to the film archival community at large, are immeasurable.

A graduate from New York University’s Department of Cinema Studies, John was both a cinéphile and a trained film scholar, whose passions ran from the glory days of Hollywood to the contemporary works of independent cinema. He had a fondness for films featuring cool, intelligent blondes, and so in tribute to our colleague, this series pays homage to two of his favorite screen beauties: Lana Turner and Nicole Kidman. The Department will also acquire a new 35mm print of Gus Van Sant’s To Die For in John’s memory.

Organized by Anne Morra, Assistant Curator, Department of Film and Media.
