Charles Laughton’s sole directorial effort, *The Night of the Hunter*—which was inspired in part by his frequent film viewings at The Museum of Modern Art—has only grown in renown over the past half-century. MoMA screens the film to mark the release of Jeff Couchman’s excellent new book, The Night of the Hunter: A Biography of a Film. The book explores the relationships between Laughton, novelist Davis Grubb, and screenwriter James Agee in intriguing detail, providing fascinating insight into the shifting dynamics of cinema and the interplay between strong-willed writers and directors.
