Nov 20–24, 2008

MoMA

Sita Sings the Blues. 2008. USA. Written, directed, and animated by Nina Paley

For the third year running, MoMA’s Department of Film, in association with IFP and its quarterly publication Filmmaker, screens the five nominees for the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You award. The nominees were selected by senior members of the Filmmaker editorial staff and by Joshua Siegel, associate curator in MoMA’s Department of Film. The five nominees represent this year’s best American independent films on the festival circuit that have yet to be picked up for theatrical distribution. Past nominees have included Goran Dukic’s Wristcutters: A Love Story, So Yong Kim’s In Between Days, and Ronald Bronstein’s Frownland. The award will be presented to the winner on December 2 at IFP’s Eighteenth Annual Gotham Awards. Filmmakers take part in a Q&A following selected screenings, and a special Modern Mondays event on November 24 brings together all five nominees for a panel discussion.

Organized by Joshua Siegel, Associate Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art; Michelle Byrd, Executive Director, IFP; Scott Macaulay, Editor, Filmmaker magazine; and Milton Tabbot, Senior Director, Programming.
