MoMA Presents: Konstantin Bojanov’s Avé

Oct 3–8, 2012

MoMA

Avé. 2011. Bulgaria. Directed by Konstantin Bojanov

Avé may have been made in Bulgaria, but the director and his coscreenwriter live in New York and the narrative, at once charming and disturbing, could take place anywhere. While hitchhiking to the funeral of a friend, Kaman meets Avé, who, much to Kaman’s annoyance, begins to hitchhike with him, telling different stories about herself—and even about him—with each pickup. This well-acted and surprisingly touching road movie is about the choices and compromises of growing up, the stuggle to create an identity, awkward friendships between “misfits,” the omnipresence of death, and the serendipity of life.

Organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator of Film.
