MoMA Presents: Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky’s Francine

Sep 12–18, 2012

MoMA

Francine. 2012. USA/Canada. Written and directed by Brian M. Cassidy, Melanie Shatzky

Recently released from prison, Francine (Academy Award winner Melissa Leo) reacts to freedom as another kind of confinement. Leo’s extraordinarily realistic portrayal of a woman at the edge of reason obliterates distinctions between performance art and acting, investing the film with a rare intensity. The filmmaking team of Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky, known for their documentaries The Patron Saints (2011) and God Provides (2007), have created a searing, naturalistic portrait of a lost soul.

Organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film.
