Ira Sachs’s chronicle of a turbulent 10-year romance between an out gay filmmaker and a promising but troubled lawyer in a New York publishing house is a sensuous affirmation of desire and commitment. With this tightly modulated and at times melancholy ballad of couplehood, Sachs (Forty Shades of Blue, 2005; Married Life, 2007; The Delta, 1996)—abetted by a terrific cast and the atmospheric camerawork of cinematographer Thimios Bakatatis—captures the adventurous, liberating, and sometimes dangerous spirit of a New York that has, like so many past embraces, faded into memory.
