Gaumont Presents: Jean Renoir’s French Cancan

Oct 17, 2011

MoMA

French Cancan. 1955. France. Directed by Jean Renoir

Each year, Gaumont presents a restoration project from its archives in France. This year, Gaumont Chairman Nicolas Seydoux and Chief Executive Officer Sidonie Dumas introduce the New York theatrical premiere of their company’s magnificent digital restoration of Jean Renoir’s French Cancan. With its vibrant palette and subject matter, this joyous Technicolor account of the founding of the Moulin Rouge by Henri Danglard at the turn of the 20th century pays tribute not only to Renoir’s father, Auguste, but also to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas. La Belle Epoque, indeed!

Organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film.
