Carte Blanche: Dieter Kosslick, the Culinary Cineaste

Aug 22–30, 2011

MoMA

Babette's Feast. 1986. Denmark. Directed by Gabriel Axel

“Eat, Drink, See Movies” was the motto of the first Kulinarisches Kino screening program at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). The series, which pairs film screenings with thematically related meals by world-renowned chefs, is the passion project of the festival’s gregarious director, Dieter Kosslick, who in recent years has reaffirmed the Berlinale’s position as the most audience friendly of the big three European festivals (Cannes, Venice, and Berlin), with nearly 300,000 admissions annually.

Kosslick is also an important international “foodie” who has done much to expand knowledge about the essential relationship between food, responsible living, and the creation of culture. A member of the international Slow Food movement since its beginning, an acclaimed cookbook author, and a fine chef in his own right, he has spent his career integrating his love for food with his knowledge of and commitment to cinema. In celebration of his 10th year as director of the Berlinale we have invited Kosslick to select some his favorite food-related films from MoMA’s collection.

Enjoy mouthwatering menu items inspired by these foodie films. The Modern is excited to celebrate Carte Blanche: Dieter Kosslick, the Culinary Cineaste with special food-and-film pairings developed by Berlin International Film Festival Director Dieter Kosslick and Chef Gabriel Kreuther. Reservations made seven or more days in advance include two complimentary tickets to the accompanying film.

Organized by Rajendra Roy, The Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film.
