The Thanhouser Company operated from 1909 to 1918 in New Rochelle, New York. An independent studio, Thanhouser produced a wide variety of films in the decade before most of the industry migrated permanently to a dense group of larger film factories in California, a move that precipitated the demise of powerhouse companies like Edison and Biograph and gave rise to Hollywood. This program of Thanhouser films from MoMA’s collection pays tribute to the quirky, heterogeneous possibilities of early cinema.
