Thanhouser: 100 Years

Oct 26, 2009

MoMA

The Thanhouser Company operated from 1909 to 1918 in New Rochelle, New York. An independent studio, Thanhouser produced a wide variety of films in the decade before most of the industry migrated permanently to a dense group of larger film factories in California, a move that precipitated the demise of powerhouse companies like Edison and Biograph and gave rise to Hollywood. This program of Thanhouser films from MoMA’s collection pays tribute to the quirky, heterogeneous possibilities of early cinema. This screening is introduced by film historian Ned Thanhouser, along with Q. David Bowers, author of Thanhouser Films: An Encyclopedia and History, 1909–1918.

Organized by Charles Silver, Curator, Department of Film, and film historians Ben Model and Steve Massa.
