Creativity Lab: Art of the Book explores the book as both an artistic medium and creative practice inspired by the ways artists use books to bring images and words together, share ideas, and tell stories. Create your own dream world by arranging familiar images, symbols, and objects across the page. Developed with collaborators Center for Book Arts, Dieu Donné, and Chang Yuchen, this project invites you to participate in a drop-in interactive installation, drawing prompts, bookmaking workshops, and a resource library of artists books.
Center for Book Arts promotes active explorations of artistic practices related to the book as an art object. Founded in 1974, Center for Book Arts is the oldest nonprofit dedicated to uplifting and furthering the book arts and book art through education, preservation, exhibition, art-making, and community building.
Dieu Donné was founded in 1976 and is the leading nonprofit cultural institution dedicated to serving emerging and established artists through the collaborative creation of contemporary art using the process of hand-papermaking.
Chang Yuchen works in an interdisciplinary manner—writing as weaving, drawing as translation, teaching as hospitality, commerce as social experiment, and publishing as a dandelion spreading its seeds. Her ongoing project Coral Dictionary is a writing system based on coral debris. Through translating visually, associatively, and emotively, a feral literacy takes shape. Yuchen is also an advocate for the art of her mother, Jin Mei.
Accessibility
In order to serve visitors with hearing loss, the Crown Creativity Lab includes induction hearing loops for sound amplification. Visitors can turn their hearing aid or cochlear implant to T-coil mode to hear enhanced sound effortlessly. The loop system does not work with hearing aids without telecoil technology.
All-gender restrooms are located on Floors 1, 3W, 5, and T1.
American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and live captioning is available for public programs upon request with two weeks’ advance notice. The Crown Creativity Lab is a participatory space activated by local partner organizations, artists, and MoMA visitors. Each project is inspired by art on view and invites creativity, personal reflection, and exchange with others. The Creativity Lab is intended for all visitors. We cannot accommodate groups larger than five people.
