P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is pleased to present the work of Paris-based filmmaker Pip Chodorov, and New York-based painters Harriet Korman and Joanna Pousette-Dart. The work of these three artists establishes a dialogue between the perception of movement that can be observed in the world, and the equilibrium of lyrical and abstract forms that grows out of the process of meditation. The exhibition is on view in the Archive Galleries beginning on June 24, 2007.
Having studied cognitive science and film semiotics, Pip Chodorov's (b. 1965) recent films and drawings explore the terrain between the two fields. While aiming to confuse the parts of the brain responsible for the perception of motion (areas VI7 and VI8 of the optical cortex), Chodorov maximizes the potential hypnotic power of repetition and irregularity.
In her oil paintings, Harriet Korman (b. 1947) questions the assumptions of Modernist grid-based abstraction. Influenced by the experimental spirit of Process Art in the early 1970s, Korman's canvases oscillate between fragmentation and wholeness, improvisation and regulated structure.
Joanna Pousette-Dart's (b. 1947) two-curved shapes are painted on canvas-covered panels. Relentlessly migrating between contour and volume, open and closed form, she never loses sight of her idiosyncratic investment in abstract art. While seemingly lyrical in her biomorphic variations, she finds a visual equivalent to life digested through a long process of observation and meditation.
