P.S.1’s Education Department presents Drawing On, an installation by Franky Kong in collaboration with ASIAM, an Asian-American student group at the Robert F. Wagner Jr. Institute of the Arts & Technology in Long Island City. The project, on view in P.S.1’s education corridor, includes over fifty drawings on paper retrieved from recycling bins at the school. The second exhibition in P.S.1’s Teen Curator Series, Drawing On is organized by Liang “Tangie” Yang, a senior at Robert F. Wagner Jr. Institute of the Arts & Technology and a member of ASIAM. Yang invited Franky Kong to create work using an aspect of the school as its focus. Using the text on recycled papers from the school as triggers for his personal imagery, Kong has developed an ironic and sometimes humorous commentary based on the contents of the discarded papers.
Franky Kong received his BFA from Cornell University in 1990. His work has been exhibited at galleries and universities around the United States, as well as at The New Museum, the Korean American Museum in Los Angeles, and Arnold and Sheila Arnoson Gallery. Kong has served as a member of Godzilla, an Asian-American artists group active in the New York art scene.
P.S.1’s Teen Curator Series was initiated at P.S.1’s reopening with the exhibition and online project Lynne Yamamoto: Selected Work, October 29, 1997 - March 1, 1998. The series, which features exhibitions curated by New York City high school students, will continue with the upcoming project by artist Juan Sánchez.
