This exhibition surveys the art of the past thirty years through a selection of important, iconic, and urgent works across all media, including prints, drawings, photography, sculpture, performance, and video. Engaging topics as important as the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and as current as the role of digital reproduction in the realm of image making, the exhibition uses different forms of storytelling as a thematic thread, from personal narrative to meditations on historiography, from documentary formats to fantasies, from figuration to institutional critique. Contemporary Encounters contains a panorama of the most important artistic voices of today, including artists such as Nan Goldin and Mike Kelley, Damien Hirst and Pipilotti Rist, Marlene Dumas and Luc Tuymans, and Wael Shawky.
