The death of the political ideals born out of the 1974 Carnation Revolution and the premature loss of a mother come together in Catarina Vasconcelos’s intimate work, a family story of love, grief, and personal ghosts that finds striking parallels with the story of a country waking up to a new life after failed dreams of communal happiness. Using family footage and the director’s correspondence with her brother, Metaphor or Sadness Inside Out is as a preface to the wondrous The Metamorphosis of Birds, in which Vasconcelos’s father and family members serve as a gateway for a poetic, intragenerational journey through time, memory, and the ungraspable multitudes of our personal and political identities.

This film accompanies The Ongoing Revolution of Portuguese Cinema.
