A Woman’s Revenge (A Vingança de Uma Mulher). 2012. Portugal. Directed by Rita Azevedo Gomes. Screenplay by Gomes, Jules-Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly. With Rita Durão, Fernando Rodrigues, Isabel Ruth, Francisco Nascimento. DCP. In Portuguese, with English subtitles. 104 min.
A former collaborator of Manoel de Oliveira and Werner Schroeter, Rita Azevedo Gomes worked with legendary director of photography Acácio de Almeida to shoot an adaptation of Barbey D’Aurevilly’s Les Diaboliques, in which a duchess gets revenge on her husband by turning to prostitution. Shot entirely in a studio, the film’s remarkable shots and bold, poetic art direction show the influence of Oliveira’s more theatrical qualities and tradition, as love and politics collide in a staged farce about the struggle of a brave, forgotten woman.
