A daring narrative about a young waste collector’s explicit, anonymous sexual adventures in Lisbon, O Fantasma introduced João Pedro Rodrigues as one of the most fearless directors in contemporary cinema. Rodrigues’s unflinching focus on his character’s transformation into a living beast who lusts for boundless desire, latex bodysuits, and nightly pleasures in public dumpsters made the film a landmark of queer cinema—a transgressive, hardcore depiction of depravity and one young man’s darkest impulses.
