Belarmino. 1964. Portugal, Brazil, France. Written and directed by Fernando Lopes. With Belarmino Fragoso, Albano Martins, Jean-Pierre Gebler, Maria Teresa de Noronha. 4K digital restoration by Cinemateca Portuguesa; courtesy Cinemateca Portuguesa. In Portuguese; English subtitles. 80 min.
Belarmino follows a has-been boxer who clings to the past and sells tales of glory to absent admirers, echoing Portugal’s fascist regime, which peddled fantasies about the country’s past to an increasingly isolated and impoverished population. Lopes’s blend of interview scenes with a realistic look at Lisbon’s nightlife and jazz scene exhibits the improvisational style, influenced by the French New Wave, that would characterize Portugal’s Cinema Novo movement.
