Change of Life (Mudar de Vida). 1966. Portugal. Directed by Paulo Rocha. Screenplay by Rocha, António Reis. With Geraldo Del Rey, Maria Barroso, Isabel Ruth. 4K digital restoration by Cinemateca Portuguesa; courtesy Cinemateca Portuguesa. In Portuguese, with English subtitles. 94 min.
After filming Lisbon’s urban and social transformations under Portugal’s fascist regime in The Green Years, Paulo Rocha moved to the coast to shoot Change of Life and show the difficulties of protecting love from the pain and mistrust that contaminated the country’s suffocating social reality. In a village of fishermen who struggle to make ends meet, a man returns from the Portuguese colonial war to discover an old flame now married to his brother, and a new attraction to a wild, mysterious woman. Unsure where to turn, he faces ocean waves that speak only of isolation and oppression.
