An essential figure in the Portuguese new wave (“Cinema Novo”), Fernando Lopes shifts between fiction and documentary in Nós por cá Todos Bem, as his crew infiltrates Portugal’s interior landscape to film a musical elegy of life among nature and its working people. As in his other work, Lopes considers cinema and the ways it reflects life, aesthetics, politics, and culture. It’s also a fruitful collaboration with one of the most popular singer-songwriters of Portugal’s post-revolutionary period, Sérgio Godinho. In Bird of Prey, João Nicolau brings music and fantasy into a middle-class Lisbon neighborhood via a dilettantish young man who dreams of songs and love amid the inescapable monotony of everyday life.
