What first seems to be a sci-fi story set among Lisbon’s modern architectural spaces soon turns into a political film about a totalitarian regime pursuing a couple for the crime of falling in love. Before becoming one of the world’s most influential ethnographic filmmakers, António Campos made The Invention of Love (influenced by Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville), a short that sparked interest from François Truffaut, among others. In People of Vieira Beach, Campos returns to his native region to capture coastal traditions amid new migration movements, creating fictional reenactments of local life and bringing a new ethnographic perspective to Portuguese post-revolutionary cinema.
