My Left Eye Sees Ghosts (我左眼見到鬼). 2002. Hong Kong. Directed by Johnnie To, Wai Ka-fai. With Sammi Cheng, Lau Ching-wan. 35mm. Courtesy American Genre Film Archive. In Cantonese; English subtitles. 98 min.
Absurdist humor has enjoyed a consistent presence in Johnnie To’s acclaimed action/crime thrillers. For the rom-com/horror mashup, My Left Eye Sees Ghosts, To and co-director and frequent collaborator Wai Ka-fai go full-blown screwball. Queen of Cantopop Sammi Cheng (Needing You…) portrays a woman mourning the loss of her newly wedded husband. A bout of self-destructive behavior ends with her gaining the wacky ability to see ghosts through her left eye. Traversing between the human and supernatural realms, the young widow befriends a lingering dead soul (a goofy Lau Ching-wan, shedding his usual tough-guy persona), and together they embark on a whimsical journey of grief and rebirth.
