Screenplay by Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur. With Miriam Hopkins, Edward G. Robinson, Joel McCrea, Walter Brennan. Howard Hawks reunited with screenwriters Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur for this period drama, set in the lawless San Francisco of the 1850s. Edward G. Robinson plays for snarling pathos as the dominant vice lord of the city’s notorious waterfront; Miriam Hopkins is the luckless young woman forced to work for him as a croupier, and McCrea (Hopkins’s leading man in five films) is the idealistic Easterner who threatens to upset Robinson’s business plans and personal agenda.
