Arguably the most admired of Nares’ moving image works, Street was inspired, as she wrote, by “my fascination with the old ‘Actuality’ [motion pictures] of the early 20th century, combined with an interest in high-speed film and videography…a tribute to the people of New York City…which will give the impression of floating though a city full of people frozen in time, caught ‘Pompeii’ like, at a particular moment of thought, expression , or activity.” As urban portraiture Street is an elegant, mesmerizing spectacle, technically contemporary in its execution and yet true to one of the earliest cinematic genres.
