Blurring theatrical illusion with “real life,” Manoel de Olivera stages the same story in four different genres, from silent farce to Biblical parable from the Book of Job, while paying homage to two absurdist modern playwrights, the Portuguese José Regio and the Irish Samuel Beckett. A subversively witty meditation on suffering, self-absorption, and regarding the pain of others, My Case stars Bulle Ogier in the juicy role of “Actress No. 1,” playing with—and against—type.
