Deux. 2002. France/Germany. Directed by Werner Schroeter. Screenplay by Schroeter, Cédric Anger. With Isabelle Huppert, Bulle Ogier. 35mm courtesy The Bureau Film Sales. In French; English subtitles. 121 min.
Deux is Werner Schroeter’s quasi-autobiographical, surreal-expressionist memory play, and a collage of hauntingly beautiful, fragmentary, and grotesque vignettes punctured by opera arias that underscore themes of fractured identity and love and death entwined. Isabelle Huppert, in two of her greatest roles, plays identical twin sisters who suddenly become aware of each other’s existence, while Bulle Ogier, only 14 years her senior, plays their estranged mother, addicted to drugs and pipe dreams.
